"New Olympian Canter reflects on time with AVSC as Aspen helps send athletes to Italy...

Jake Canter won his first World Cup on Saturday in Snowmass. Afterward, he was officially named to the U.S. Olympic team for the first time ahead of next month’s Games in Milan Cortina. And it all came together in a place near and dear to his heart.

“It’s unbelievable. To do it on that course and here, it was a dream,” Canter said late Saturday from the “Road to Italy” Olympic send-off celebration hosted by U.S. Ski & Snowboard at the base of Aspen Mountain. “I have a lot of friends, a lot of family here. I don’t know what it is. There is a certain energy in this valley. You wake up in the morning, and you are excited, ready to get after it. I love it here.”...

"Aspenites defend home halfpipe...

Tons of local love awaited Aspen’s halfpipe skiers, who showed out in the FIS World Cup U.S. Grand Prix qualifiers on Thursday.

Alex Ferreira did his usual thing, dropping two runs that scored in the 90s to win his heat and lead a fleet of four locals to advance through to Saturday’s finals, with other highlights up and down the results sheet.

Tristan Feinberg battled through the morning’s tough conditions to finish fourth in his heat. Hanna Faulhaber qualified for her first World Cup final in more than two years. Nick Geiser took third place in his heat, showing he can compete with the big dogs in the sport...

"Aspen’s Geiser a surprise Grand Prix finalist as Ferreira cruises in halfpipe ski qualifying...

Nick Geiser’s season and Olympic hopes were on life support entering the week. But after Thursday’s men’s halfpipe skiing qualifier for the U.S. Grand Prix at Buttermilk Ski Area, his Italian dreams have suddenly been rekindled. “I’m just stoked I landed a run,” the 21-year-old from Aspen said after. “I didn’t do well the past two comps and struggled, and I was losing my confidence. It felt so good to just stomp something and get a good score. So, I’m hyped.” One of a handful of Roaring Fork Valley locals competing Thursday in the World Cup and final Olympic qualifier for Team USA before the Milan Cortina Games next month in Italy, he’s now a surprise darkhorse to make the team heading into Saturday’s final at Buttermilk..
